As a former organic chemist who worked for corporations and a university 
heart research program, I ALWAYS had to sign a non-disclosure agreement as 
part of employment.  It's the norm.  My husband who is a physicist and 
electronics engineer signs them, too.  They are facts of life.

Even in my writing career, I've signed similar agreements.

I agree with your points about Monsanto, but non-disclosure agreements are 
not unusual.  If a scientist, engineer or writer encounters a situation that 
clashes with his moral and ethical convictions, he or she can quit, seek 
other employment or refuse to do it.  I've been there and resigned.
