Re: USDA Climate Zones

That's what makes garden writing for SoCal so much fun and such a
challenge. You can always tell as you read various publications that carry garden
articles and apply them for SoCal as well as other areas of the country that
the writer isn't familiar with SoCal. I've gardened in the desert, Inland
Empire, coastal and Central Coast for more years than I care to count and
I'm learning new things every day.

The USDA Climate Zones are east-coast centric. For example, many plants
listed as hardy up to zones 8 or 9 actually will grow happily in coastal
southern California, which is zone 10. But it won't grow in Florida, so it's
not given a zone 10 listing. I find the White Flower Farm website and
catalog very helpful for more accurate zone information (at least for the
plants they carry) because they list plants as hardy in, say, USDA Zone 4 - 8
S, 4 - 10 W.
