Re: Incorporating
Hello, Melanie,
Without incorporating, you are already a business, a sole proprietorship.
Not every business is a corporation. In addition to sole proprietorships and
corporations, there are various kinds of partnerships and probably a lot
else.
The details vary from state to state, so you should get local tax and legal
advice.
There's also a thing called "fictitious name" in some states, including
Pennsylvania. After moving here to Wayne, PA, I dumped my old business name,
Longwood Cottage Publishing, which I formed when I lived in Longwood,
Florida. Here in Pennsylvania, I didn't want to be confused with (or asked
to cease and desist by) Longwood Gardens, which is not too far away, and
also I would have had to file fictitious name petitions in various ways
($$$). If I used my own name in some manner the fictitious name law didn't
come in to play.
So my little biz has been B. B. Mackey Books ever since.
