Right now I'm looking at buying some heavy duty equipment for garden
writing, lecturing and photography. Simply put, I'm in the market for a high
end digital camera (thinking of the Nikon D70), a lap top computer and a
digital projector.
At this time, with more lecture offers, writing offers, and book proposals,
I've been considering incorporating, actually forming a business. I'd like
to know the pro's and con's to having a business and would appreciate any
comments from this group.
Thank you in advance,

Melanie --
The general rule of thumb my accountant taught me was that if you weren't bringing in more than $100K a year, incorporation does not make economic sense (I am sure that would be $15-200K now, as it was a good while ago). I just dissolved my corp, as I took a full time job, and it isn't worth the legal, accounting and tax bills I was paying for the amount of outside work I am doing now.
As to the techy stuff, here is what I would suggest (and seeing some of the other posters on this particular day, I know there are other opinions out there...
D70 is not high end, but a fine camera and good enough (I use Canon, though, as that is where my lens investment is);
Make sure the projector is at least 1024X768, DLP, at least 1200, but preferably 2000 lumens, and will double for home use; i.e., is compatible with HDTV. Bulb life and replacement cost is a major factor, and for me, so is weight and decibel level. I bought mine (lesser specs -- a while ago) at http://www.presentingsolutions.com/index.asp and found their web site very helpful to sort out the specs. As to laptops, I have had Toshibas, HP's, Sonys and Dells as well as a few IBM Thinkpads. I doubt I will ever buy anything but a thinkpad in the future. (An aside for other techies: I got my first true laptop around 1989, a Toshiba T-110 running XyWrite in DOS, but had three or four "suitcase" portables before that, going back to the third Kaypro in New England (around 1982, which ran CP/M, had 64K main memory, a five inch screen, no hard drive, and two 160K single sided 5.25 floppy drives packed into its 25 pound suitcasee frame.)
Back to work....
