There's the Morton Arboretum with its new visitors' center  
overlooking a pond and a state of the art children's garden. Just up  
the hill from there is a giant twig sculpture by Patrick Dougherty  
that's worth seeing. It's called "Xanadu" and it does suggest  
Coleridge's stately pleasure dome.

Garfield Conservatory has a new outside garden partially designed by  
Doug Hoerr and in front there's the Monet garden, which has matured  
nicely. The conservatory itself is huge and dates back to Jens  
Jensen. The main hall has a new glass roof that was funded by the  
Chihuly exhibit a few years ago. There's a colorful garden outside  
the much smaller Lincoln Park Conservatory as well. Has stunning  
views with city skyscrapers to the south.

For private gardens, everybody wants to visit Trudi Temple's garden  
in Hinsdale. It's just under an acre and is justly famous. I wrote  
about it years ago in Horticulture. Contact me off line if you want  
details.

Also, you must take in the Michigan Ave. median plantings. Chicago  
now has 60 miles of median plantings, maybe 70 by now, but those on  
Michigan Ave. are always breathtaking. They run from Oak Street on  
the north to Congress Expressway on the south.

These days all the high rises along Lake Shore Drive compete with  
each other for the most colorful "front yard" plantings. Worth a  
stroll. Go to Oak Street and walk north.
