Re: Yard vs Garden

I agree with Dan; this had been bothering me, too. Our family talked
about the "front yard" and the "backyard." Never saw any problem with
that. To me the yard is the location of the garden, e.g., my lavender
garden is in the front yard. Well, there does happen to be a giant
propane tank there, but I choose not to look at it.

I would be curious to learn whether this is a generational thing (never
ask a lady her age, but old enough), a regional thing, or a social
class/status thing. 

We never considered the yard as a strictly utilitarian place; it was
where we did stuff outdoors. In conclusion, I would describe a yard as a
place and a garden as a thing --- different kinds of nouns :-).
