Re: Garden pests and control
About twenty years ago, this pest control account was told to me by a dear
old lady in my town here near Philadelphia. She's gone now so I can't get
any further details.
During World War II, a newlywed, she and her serviceman husband lived in a
small rented house near the base somewhere in Florida. It was their first
home and she was thrilled with it until she came across a gigantic
hard-shelled beetle about ten inches long, walking calmly through the place
on its long legs. She freaked out (they didn't say that back then) and
whacked it with something and killed it. When the landlord came, he asked
how everything was, and then asked about the beetle. He was furious to learn
that she had killed it. It had been purchased for the purpose of killing
palmetto bugs, the most common type of local roach.
