Re: Plant by numbers

Plant by numbers doesn't mean the end of gardening. It means new
beginnings. I recently wrote an article called "Gardens to Go," which is
basically the same premise (March 2002 Today's Creative Home Arts). I found
plenty of mainstream plant purveyors who sell collections of seeds and/or
plants, along with planting diagrams and planting grids. The choices of
which plant compliments the other, which plant endures low water situations
or thrives in shade, which colors work best, etc. are made for the
first-time garden consumer or those who little time to get an education in
horticulture. Frankly, it has been my experience that a positive first
experience growing things leads to more experiences. The new gardener now
feels confident enough to try something else. Plus, we garden writers still
have plenty to write about. We can put together gardens for novices,
suggest combinations, etc. The most important thing we can do is to make a
new gardener aware of how important soil preparation and maintenance are.
