It is (or, at least, was) a very common thing, Dan. But a game for amateurs.

What the deal was is that you'd write an article, which they'd post. And then 
they'd pay you (usually in pennies) for every hit the article scored. Idea, 
of course, was for you to then go out and drive people to that site, so 
they'd read your articles and increase your income. In reality, it was a way 
for the site owner to build total hits and sell ads while you did his 
marketing work. 

Ranks right up there, far as I'm concerned, with the site owners who moan 
about being so poor they can't pay for submissions, but we should write for 
them just for the love of it. Uh, huh. I notice that most of those sites are 
filled with pop ups and banners. So the game is, we supply free ink while 
they reap the benefits in ad sales. Another system for amateurs. Or people 
with a vested interest doing PR work.
