Re: US books in the UK
The reluctance of American publishers to adapt gardening books to metric
measurements is another instance of rejecting another country's way of doing
things. Anyone who does regular work in chemical research uses the metric system
and wishes we all did. Does anyone remember the Mars lander that failed
because two systems of measuring were used and then conversions weren't made?
There are differences in the electrical system between North America and the
rest of the world, and there should be reconcilement there. Sixty cycle
alternating current is a very handy system and if that could become a worldwide
standard it would help us all in using electrical appliances.
The metric system is an attempt to be logical and reflect reality. Perhaps
Graham Rice could give us the history of the English system used so fervently
in the United States.
Perhaps we should ask the RHS to mention any books that they review that are
American efforts without metric values. It would be a warning and polite
criticism of those books,
