Re: LCD Projectors
Seems we have two issues going here and I think Rich gave a pretty good
lecture about one of them. His response is now in my "professional advice"
folder for reference.
The other has to do more with presentation methodology rather than the
technology used.
Here's my thoughts.
A bad speaker will be a bad speaker no matter the topic, the av technology
( are we allowed to say "av" anymore?) or the venue- including the crowd.
A good speaker/presenter ( or must we call ourselves "communicators"?) will
read the crowd, the purpose of the presentation, the materials available and
marry them all into one boffo piece of educational entertainment that will
guarantee cheques - like that D fella gets.
In a recent seminar, I brought up 73 shrubs, and bits and pieces of another
75 or so trees.(Helps when you have a nursery to hand.) Mind you it was to a
professional landscaping group and we had about 6 hours to play around. I've
given talks in the legion hall with slides and a pre-war projector. At a
hort society event, I showed up with flats of 4" grasses. What I love to do
is slot in to a "speakers' series" type of event and not bring anything-
just myself. Several things happen: I really challenge myself to be able to
pull it off, folks get a break from the "talking to the slide"
presentations, and I get remembered- which is important for snagging the
next gig, so to speak. (Unless I tank the thing and get tossed onto the dung
heap.)
Venue is the primary determiner (?) for your manner of presentation. At
Canada Blooms, eg, the speaker for Heritage Perennials would have no choice
but to project images on a screen. The talk was about their new line-up for
07 ( with little sidebars showing how their other plants could be used to
enhance the display) and, with several hundred in the audience, it would
have been less than useful to hold up a 6" or 1 gal pot.
I like to engage the audience and develop conversations ( carefully
directed) that adds depth to the talk, lets you manage your material- how
technical/how flowery etc do they want it, and responds directly to what
they want to know. Make no mistake, I want the cheque and I want to be
invited back next time and I pay close attention to making sure that
happens.
Btw, an overhead projector that works beats the best technology on the
market if it don't light up when you press the switch. That said, I see
nothing wrong with using the latest technology if it fits your presentation.
Those were my scattered thoughts.
