Single opt-in is when you sign up for a newsletter - you're on the list with
no confirming message or need to confirm you own the email address. Single
action
Double opt-in is when you sign up - and you have to click a link to confirm
that you own the email address. Two distinct actions.
Single opt-ins are prone to misuse - lots of pranksters sign up friends or
worse yet, others folks (and you get the blame as a spammer). Single
opt-in newsletter sign ups are just asking for trouble and a spam ranking
because of this abuse factor. Double opt-ins have lower signup completion
rates but are more secure for the list-owner.
