Re: Stylebook committee

Brook, the AP stylebook recommends lowercasing the names of plants, but capitalizing "proper nouns or adjectives that occur in a name.
Some examples: tree, fir, Douglas fir, Scotch pine, etc.
"If a botanical name is used, capitalize the first word; lowercase others: pine tree (Pinus), red cedar (Juniperus virginiana), blue azalea (Callicarpa americana), Kentucky coffee tree (Gymnocladus dioica)." (Note the botanical names in their example are in italics). Margaret L

While I generally agree with you that there already are too many stylebooks,
I can understand why one would be needed for gardenwriters. None of the
others address the specific technical needs of our industry.

For instance, do you write: Allium cepa var. aggregatum; Allium cepa
(aggregatum); or Allium cepa aggregatum? I've seen all three at various
times. And do you italicize it or not?

So a garden writers stylebook could be useful. This presupposes, however,
that our markets adopt it (problematical), and that we, as writers, use it
(unlikely overall).

Whether GWA is the one to create such a stylebook is an open question. I
refrain from comment.
