[GWL]: climate zones
To my knowledge there is no equivalent of the USDA (United States Department
of Agriculture) climate zone map in Europe, although I once saw the American
zones on a European map. The reason the USDA map doesn't always apply
accurately to England is because it is a cold tolerance map and has nothing
to do with heat tolerance (or lack thereof). That is why the American
Horticultural society worked to create the Heat Zone map which records the
warm extremes of North American climates and rates plants for their
tolerance. When determining the hardiness of a plant in North America, the
USDA climate zones should be used in conjunction with the AHS heat zone
ratings.
