Larry,
In defense of the USDA zones, there is considerable merit in knowing the
historical low temperatures. Many kinds of fruit trees are hard to a certain
degree and not a degree lower. When I lived in northern Minnesota, zone 3, I
found that out many times with different cultivars of apples, cherries and
plums.
