The USDA zone system is almost worthless for real-life gardeners.
For example, it puts the Siskiyou mountains of Oregon,
the Mississippi gulf coast, and part of the Mojave desert
all in zone 8. 

It is a good guide to historical low temperatures,
but that's all.
