[GWL]: AHS Heat Zone Map
Graham Rice asked:
>Does anyone use the Heat Zone map produced by the AHS and, I think,
>Sunset? Has anyone found it useful?
Yes, I used the heat zone map extensively when I lived south of Houston, TX
on the Gulf of Mexico. We were in a tropical pocket that was Zone 9 on the
USDA Climate map, but it was an 11 on the heat map. Garden centers there
are much more conscious of what will flourish in the heat, what will flower
or fruit, etc. And many are now listing the AHS Heat Zones on plants at
point of purchase--on benches. It will be a long time until wholesale
propagators list the heat zones on plant tags. Zone 9 can cover so many
situations--from my tropical pocket to cool, foggy Santa Monica, CA. The
heat zone map refines climate much more in my opinion. We should all thank
Dr. Marc Cathay, who was instrumental in the AHS heat zone map creation.
