They don't get paid much. Having worked in garden centers, I can shed
some light on the subject. 

Most places do not pay enough to attract top help. Most people can't
afford to work just for the love of it. The jobs are hourly and come
without benefits. They are also seasonal, with even a shorter time frame
than most jobs in the industry. Once the burst of peak buying season is
over, they start laying off workers. The job also involves a lot of heavy
lifting, which knowledgeable people are not necessarily able to do -- so
they aren't hired. The 18- year- old with muscles is preferred over the
50- year- old with knowledge. So they really aren't getting paid to help
the customer, not with information anyone. If you want information, you'd
better go to a small owner-run place where the owner can fill you in.
