RE: [GWL]: Poor information from garden centers

Fran and all,

I understand all of that, I worked in the garden department at
Wal-Mart...but even local nurseries (could it be because I'm in
Indiana?) with supposedly "trained, professionsals" look at me like I've
just introduced a new plant when I enquire about something......it's
very frustrating!

I was looking for a fertilizer this spring that I couldn't find locally.
I asked the local nursery what they would recommend.  He said "what are
you growing?"  I said rainforest plants...and began to name some.  He
said "I really couldn't tell you.  I don't know anything about those."

I also encountered the same problem when I was searching for scoria
rock.  I still have not found any so if anyone has some, please let me
know.  My Worseyla would thank you!

I also found that even our local (Fort Wayne) botanical garden staff is
not familiar with many tropical plants.  I go there for advice and we
end up spending hours searching through their library!  I wanted to know
how to pollinate a Bird Of Paradise, how long it took to get one to
bloom and what to do after it bloomed....the answer I received was "We
grow one here and it's in bloom if you would like to see it.  I can't
really tell you any of the other."  

I don't know what you learn in horticulture but I would think these
would be simple answers for someone who had sucessfully graduated.
Please correct me if I am wrong.
