Thanks for all the great replies folks! I must apologize for my
misconception about the cost for agents.

I've often thought of self-publishing, but it's really not about what I
want. It's about writing a book that will sell on it's own.

What are "acquisitions editors?"

And Ms. Betty, you said: "If you are a writer and you have a valuable book
idea for which you think there is a major market..." How does one know if
one's book idea is valuable? At one point, I thought a good friend of mine
(who's a very well-known published author, lecturer, and garden writer)
would help me with my book idea, but he never seemed very interested.
Perhaps my book idea isn't valuable, but he never said so.

Again, thanks for the helpful input, it's much appreciated.
