They've been doing this sort of thing in films for decades. Watch a good chase scene and you'll see that the car the hero drives is one make and those that crash and burn are all of the competing brand. The hero will always drink a certain brand of whiskey.
It doesn't hurt anything, as long as the product really suits the character, and it is certainly preferable to having to skip over pages of cardboard ads in my paperback books. You don't have to skip over anything - painless exposure.
In novels those brand names can do a lot to help develop a character.
In a gardening book it's a bit different. Mentioning a brand name is an endorsement. We would have to be careful to only recommend those products we truly believe in.
And if we accept a fee to mention Scotts somewhere in the book or article, does that mean we must refrain from mentioning other useful products that didn't pay us to include them? Or does that simply make the company who paid for their mention a sucker?
