If there a difference, it is the same as a company hiring a Public 
Relations firm and an Advertising firm to promote a company's product.

In both cases a fee is paid for a service. While advertisements must be 
clearing identified to differentiate them from magazine articles, public 
relation campaigns are by there very nature "stealth" and attempt to 
formulate a desired effect without the target audience being aware of 
the message on a conscience level.

The end result in both efforts is to promote the desired outcome. An 
outright product endorsement to a non actor who actually uses the 
product is aboveboard. The reader of an article assumes that they are 
reading a fair and balanced point of view. The writer who violates this 
trust, in my opinion, is unethical and dishonest unless the payment is 
disclosed in the article. Any article, in which the writer has been paid 
to mention a product, should be labeled as an advertisement by the 
magazine and they should collect revenue from the company for printing 
the "article".
