Re: GWA AWards

TC,

If you'd like a popularity contest instead of judged entries, please suggest it to a member of the GWA executive committee (board). They're the ones who make and change the rules.

The entry fees pay for administering the contest -- bringing the judges together, putting them up for two nights, feeding them, renting a big room in which to hold the judging. We usually break even on this, but sometimes lose money. In no way is the awards process a money-maker.

Last year during the GWL comments on the awards, it was suggested that much of this could all be done remotely. And certainly the discussions could be done electronically. BUT -- and this is a big but -- it would be a nightmare to sent 50 to 100 books out to four judges. The logistics are really tough because we generally get so many entries. I can tell you that many different ways have been considered (and the most promising tried) and the judging seems to work best as it's done now.

But the committee and ExCom are always open to new ideas from members.
