A year old card is not that old, Tanya but its always important to update your software. That said, your computer should be able to download photos using the card reader regardless of the camera software. You only need the canon software when you are plugging the camera in to the computer for the download. With the card reader, the computer "interprets" the reader as an external device. Did software come with the reader by chance?
Unless you have iphoto set up to automatically import the images, then indeed, its up to you to drag files from the card to the computer. That puts them onto the computer but not into iPhoto. That said, your computer shoudl recognize the card reader in fractions of a second.
Is your system software up to date? That could be the problem right there...
BTW, I never store photos on cards or on flash drives. I have a series of external drives (including a raid drive) and an off site cloud bacup for all of my files including photos.
