Re: off subject

Mary,

First I want to say how sorry I am that your family suffered such a terrible loss. Would the pain have been any less if alcohol had not been involved?

The billboard at our State Police station shows that more people have died in accidents that are not alcohol related than have died in accidents that are alcohol related in Delaware.

A very sad situation occurred recently north of us where a non drinking driver ran a red light and killed a 21 year old woman. The judge did not give this man jail time and gave as part of his reasoning "that alcohol was not involved". I somehow doubt that this makes her family and friends feel any better.

It is sad that Robert Downey Jrs.' substance abuse problems causes some people to put him in the same category as people who feel no remorse after committing manslaughter with their automobiles.

Chick,

They do NOT learn, even after spending 10 years in jail for killing two 13 year old boys.  The guy got out after 10 years and went right back to drinking and driving (DUI within the first year back out!)  I know several who are paralyzed because of drinking and driving (theirs or others) and know even more who are survivors of people killed by drunk drivers.  There are people out there who NEVER take responsibility for their own actions.  It is their wife, parents, boss, the job, etc as to why they drink.  Nineteen months after our grandson was killed, his killer made this statement before being sentenced.  "I am glad that this is finally over and I can get on with the rest of my life."  He NEVER said he was sorry for killing this child. Need I say more???

Some learn and stop drinking/drugging while others NEVER learn.  Everyone is different.  I wish everyone could quit bad habits/addictions...but....

I think what he can't handle is an addiction to drugs.  I'd be more judgemental if I could loose about 25 pounds, like my doctor told me to do about 10 years ago.  For some reason, it seems logical to me to take blood pressure medication every day rather than give up fattening food and beer.

At least I quit smoking about 20 years ago.  Funny how some people can't quit even though they know they're likely to die from it.  I bet if we threw their asses in jail they'd quit.

Luckily, most of our addictions are just stupid, not illegal.  Frankly I can't see the logic in throwing someone in jail for ruining his own life.  But hey, you can't argue with success, can you?

Liberal to the very end.
Gotta go now, got a bit of heart burn and a pain running down my arm.  I think my body is telling me it needs another beer.
