Maria,
    I use Whitney Farms Seed Starting Mix for my cuttings.  Don't know
if it is available in Montana.  I think it is easier to see how wet/dry
the mix is over perlite although both are sterile.  I let my cuttings
get very dry and keep them out of direct light for about 48 hours after
taking them.
