Diana, I've had good luck with adding even a thin layer of composted
manure (the bagged kind) along with organic fertilizer such as a 5-8-5,
or even 5-10-12 (good for bulbs as well) and digging it in well. If you
add alfalfa meal, use it lightly and add potassium and phosphorus, since
alfalfa is nitrogen-rich. Too much nitrogen will produce daylily
foliage at the expense of flowers.
And hi, all -- I'm new to this list but have been on the perennials
list for a while. I have a city garden in Chicago with almost 40
daylily cultivars -- would like dozens more but space is an issue!
