brown, dying Areca

Before you ask, no, I don't know anything about this plant!

My sister called me today and wanted me to ask someone for help with a plant
called:  Areca

It's brown and dying.  She puts it in the shower and waters and then lets it
drain about every 10 days or so.  It has started turning brown and dying.
 The brown parts she's been cutting off with scissors.  It's sitting in front
of a window with lots of sunlight, and she's even removed the sheers thinking
that it was cutting off to much sun from the plants.

So, what can I tell her?
