I scanned a picture of a rose gall on my Rosa Munda

If this is what you have, there is a whole discussion at this URL about
the problem, and further down the page scans of the gall in its earlier
stages. Intriguing growth, isn't it? I left mine, and they have confined
themselves to that single plant.
