I'm not sure if it's true for wood chips, but sawdust will leach nitrogen
from the soil and make the leaves of your plants yellow and sick looking.
You can still use it and compensate with nitrogen rich fertilizer, I
suppose, but I prefer a "mat" of good ol' compost for my roses.
How about using the chips in an area for pathways?
