Hi there,
Never have had a Japanese beetle. Having said that they'll probably be in
the hundreds tomorrow. Maybe they'll eat the ravaging rabbits.
My rugosa is not 'Sara Van Fleet.' There are nasty thorns; stamens are
yellow but certainly not vivid. They look more like an afterthought. It
blooms best in late May and in June, followed by occasional blossoms the
rest of the season. It produces hips, lots of them.
It is producing suckers this year. I may dig some up and put them in the
back of my yard.
Yes, Thumper's cousins eat rose canes, at least mine. The only rose not
tempting them is the rugosa. All the others have thorns, but those wascally
wabbits (quoting Elmer Fudd) don't seem to mind.
A local rose grower told me the other day that the best way to curb rabbits
is to pour human urine around the edges of the flower gardens. I thought he
was joking until I found this "solution" (he-ha) in a book written by Jerry
Baker, the self-proclaimed America's Master Gardener. I'm not about to fill
up plastic gallon milk containers.
The only thing nice I can say about my herd of wabbits is that they do a
good job of fertilizing my gardens.
John
