Funny thing about this rose: the American nurseries (the J&P catalog for
one) say it's a three-footer, just right for the front of a bed. The
David Austin catalog I bought somewhere, "100 English roses for the
American garden", says it could get to 8 ft, with 6 ft in breadth. When
it arrived, I thought "Hmmmm" as I looked at the incredibly sturdy and
lusty-looking root stock.
So I planted it by itself at one end, with room for either possibility.
So far, it's spread quite happily, in spite of being dug up in a theft
attempt (Grand theft, Roses--but that's another story) and I've had to
move all the other plants I put in around it. Looks like the height will
come. Bloomed the first year, too: gorgeous, dark red, with a glorious
rose fragrance. I pegged it, by the way. The *blooms* I don't mind
people having. I just objected to someone trying to make off with the
whole plant!
