Hello

I live in zone 5 also ( SE Wisconsin) and I have found this year that
the aphids were aweful as I have said before I am novice but I found a
cheap way to get rid of these nasty bugs and still keep my plants
healthy I spray soap water on the canes where the aphids are it is an
old trick my mom used when she had a beautiful garden ( she died when i
was a kid). just take dish soap put it in a spray bottle with some warm
water and go after those little bugs it does not harm the rose bush but
it gets rid of the bugs . I also have another tip for fertilizeing in
the spring pour one gallon of water mixed with one teaspoon of ammonia
onto the base of the plant ( I mentioned this before and when I tried it
it really worked!!) I swear the next morning after treating my roses I
had one that looked like a dead twig before treating and the next
morning it had an inch of new growth on it . I am looking forward to
next year to see how well my plants survive the winter this was only
their first year. I just wish I had kept the names of my plants all of
the books I have looked in are no help at all well I think I have
learned my lesson and next year when I add more roses to my garden I
will save the tags!!!! Does anyone else grow other things in their
garden too? I am putting in a bulb garden I have quite a few varieties
that need to be planted ( too bad it is cold and rainy) and I am
thinking about putting in some calla lillies does anyone know if these
do well in my region? the stuff I have read says little about how to
help hardy hybrid Callas to grow ( can you tell I have very little time
to read?? ) oh well I am glad to see the activity has picked up !!
