Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
Basalt, Colorado - 7000 feet - Zone 4
Last spring frost date is June 15 for our micro-climate..
Like Dorothy - not a lot going on in the way of plant growth here. Lows have
been in the teens and twenties, highs in the 50's with snow every two days or
so. This last weekend was very nice and I built frames around my garden. This
is our second summer in a rental so we're investing a bit more elbow grease in
sprucing up what was an abandoned garden with 6inch x 20foot pieces of lumber we
found on a locals ranch...free for the taking. Looks like well weathered old
barn wood. Last year we moved in around July so I got a late start and really
only used part of the garden. This year we are sifting the large rocks and
other items out of the garden soil and working in some compost from last year's
compost piles. We live in a refurbished train depot (The Sloess Depot for any
history buffs out there) and as we sifted the garden dirt we found train spikes,
square nails, bit of old white glazed pottery, and a few bits of coal (!). What
a treasure trove. Still hoping to find the tin box full of money, but no luck
yet! The soil is loose, dark and beautiful - a bit dry. But it's seems way to
cold for anything to survive yet. Along the south side of our house I noticed
the herbs in my herb corner were greening up. Chives were about an inch high.
Tomatoes and some flower starts are doing well indoors under shop lights - about
6-8 inches high on sturdy stems. Went up the road to some forest service
property and cut a few young willows and red alder for building some pole bean
tee-pees. Started broccoli, kale, and spinach seeds under shop lights last
weekend.
Good to hear from everyone else who is out in their yards already. Keeps my
anticipation high!
Happy Gardening!
Ann
