Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
Hi Ann,
Boy I'm glad we just have the rain and the snow is gone! We must be on
the edge of Zones 6&7 in Maryland. Like you we just moved (in February in
18 inches of snow) so we had no idea what was really here until it started
to warm up a bit. The previous owner once had a good sized garden and the
soil is pretty good if a bit rocky. But it was left to the elements for the
last few years and a mess to clean up. We are building boxes one at a time
and sifting out the rocks. The boxes are only 6 inches above ground so I
think next year we will add another 6 inches so I can garden on a cart.
(it's getting tough to get back up once I'm down!!) The only thing I
noticed in the garden are tons of onions. They must have been let go to
seed. They are everywhere! Also, pounds of worms!! I'm glad he was
relatively organic. I'm really late getting anything in the ground and will
probably spend the entire season hauling water and covering cool weather
crops but we will see how it goes. It's been about 10 years since I had any
room (and inclination) to garden, so I'm back to the experimental stage (try
it and see!) The seeds I started about 3 weeks ago are getting a little
leggy and don't have any second set of leaves yet. Are they getting too
little or too much of something? I used to buy seedlings but got a little
ambitious this year and decided to try it myself. I may have to go buy
seedlings if they don't do something soon.
When the vegetables and flowers are in then I can start on the flower
gardens and trees. ( There are 9.5 acres here all but 1 is grass and meadow
or pond and stream) I LOVE it but what a lot of work.
Good luck to you and I hope you soon see SPRING!!
Still surrounded by BOXES!
Cathy
