Re: Watermelon and curbside junking

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Not that I know a thing about watermelons-but what would stop you from
putting a makeshift trellis against- or interwoven with the cyclone fence
for height if you needed it? I did this with honeysuckle- when I wanted a
screen and only had a 4 ft high cyclone fence. I attached the the pvc pipe
to the clyclone fence at about 8 inch intervals with cable ties(love those
babies!) and stuck them(the pvc) on rebar that I put in the ground-then
attached the crossbar with the elbow thingies. It doesnot seem to stress the
fence out and is more stable than if it were standing alone.
Today I went out curb collecting again- Am following the city cleanup trucks
around like a madwoman swooping up anything that I think I can use for
structure in the yard- Amazing what people throw away on big dump day. Got 4
full sized pieces of white plastic lattice and 14- 6ft beautiful redwood
2x6s left over from someones project. Picked up two doors with windows in
them and am going to figure out how to build a cold frame for next year. The
spring came so fast and early here that we are already getting 80-90 degree
days- I am in Sacramento Ca- I think it is zone7?-9? It is usually rainy til
the end of april-but it looks like late may lately .The ground is still cold
tho- but dry-soI am just using this time to prepare my beds. I am afraid of
jumping the gun and getting somwecold weather later- we have had many late
freezes over the years that have wiped out our spring planting.I only know
about flowers( and not much about those)-so someone correct me if it is
different with summer vegies.-I am enjoying this list so much- I finally
feel like I am working with a net."Leaf "it to Frank to tell us all about
tree foliage!._Thanks to everyone responding to my newbie posts- You are all
very kind.-Teri----- Original Message -----
