Re: Strawberries, birds and snakes

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Hi Cathy,

M good friend Sally up in the Catskills always said that if you smell
CUCUMBERS (and you're not growing any where you smell them) then you
should go back the way you came and go inside. She said that a lot of
pit vipers, which are the class of snakes that copperheads belong too,
do give off a scent that smells just like cucumbers. Though I have never
had the chance to encounter a copperhead or other poisonous snake other
than the little massasagua, I have no reason to doubt her.

There's another saying about the coloration of snakes that's well worth remembering:

RED next to BLACK is a friend of Jack
RED next to YELLOW will kill a fellow.

I won't be staying long enough around a red, black, and yellow snake to
verify what color is next to which color.......I'll be long gone with a
trail of flames coming up from the ground where my feet just were, LOL!

You should contact ENCON or the DEC to find out if they have
recommendations for you as to how to prevent encounters with snakes.
There's not much you can do to "relocate" them as most are protected in
the wild. But don't worry about it, they're just as afraid of you as you
are them and they will go slither off and not bother you.

Trudi

PS.........don't disturb any old fallen trees, or move piles of large
rocks as these are favorite places for snakes to make their dens.
