Re: Sqft Gardener's Logbook - week of 4/3/00

Teri- I do not remember any particular ideas regarding clematis that will
endure full sun. As I understand clematis, most clematis flourish under full
sun. A few clematis do better in partial shade than others.

The problem is that they need cool roots to be able to move water up their
skinny little vines and branches. Hot sun reaching the base of the vine is
said to bake the vine (and evaporate the moisture in the vine) and reduce
the clematis' ability to move moisture up to the top where the flowers are..
We must heed the shaded root warning to be enable the clematis to flower as
it should in full sun.

Because clematis are heavy feeders we should not strain the soil with
another heavy feeder as a ground cover. Vinca Minor (very invasive but a
great plant), Bugle Weed, daylilies, ferns, perennials like poppies,
marigolds, etc. or light feeding annuals will shade the roots of a clematis
without using up the soil's fertility.

I can tell you that clematis generally enjoy the sun and require a good days
worth to really shine, so to speak. I am so looking forward to my own first
clematis. If you would care to, this site has a large number of clematis to
view. Joan is a clematis lover!

I am sending this to you directly because last week someone was complaining
about being off topic. Hope you do not mind.

Have a great day,
bill missen.
