Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
Hi,
I'm quite new to this list and to square foot gardening.
I'm not new to gardening in general and I belong to other gardening lists-a
greenhouse list, another 4x4 list that is so inactive I'm going to quit
it and I have reams of gardening websites bookmarked for whenever I want
to amuse myself with general information on just about any topic.
I joined this list because its specific focus on
sqft. gardening was what I needed to concentrate on and find help with.
Unfortunately, I have not found it to be too inspiring or helpful so far
for someone in my beginning state. I've had several questions that are
definitely within the focus of this group posted for a couple days now
and am still hoping that someone out there can help but honestly I see
mostly topics being posted that could be posted on general discussion groups.
I fully expected (hoped) to find sqft. purists who could enthusiastically
help me join the ranks of this specialty and not simply swap gardening
info in general.
Now I can certainly appreciate that a group like
this becomes friends and we wish to share ideas that fall farther away
from the centre of the wheel hub, to use someone else's analogy. A constructive
solution to this, and one which out of necessity was done with another
loop I belong to which is in no way related to gardening, was to form an
offshoot loop, in this case 'sq.ft. off topic loop'. We can still be friends
together but without diluting the specialized flavour of the official sq.
ft. ON topic loop.
I don't mean to sound stuck up, but if this group
can't answer my questions when it is directly connected to Mel's site,
where can I get them answered? I realize too that many of you are past
my beginner's stage and the questions may seem boring or something but
there is still a need out there for someone to be available to help people
like me get started. If the energy it takes to participate in a loop gets
put into off topic postings, there will be less tendency to fulfill the
original purpose and focus of the loop and on topic postings will get neglected.
This is what I feel is happening currently. Have people run out of things
to discuss about sqft. principles? If so, why should newcomers be inspired
to conversion? Following Mel's book to the letter would likely only succeed
if we all lived in his back yard, so I was hoping to hear more discussion
on the success and failures you all have had in applying his principles
and learning when and how it is appropriate to adapt them.
Bill, I liked your phrase 'building sq.ft. gardening
into an experience for all to enjoy'. I do believe that many things in
our yards will affect our sq.ft. experience and vice versa. I do wish to
hear about these experiences. It's the interaction of sq.ft. principles
with our yards that helps us to be inspired to enjoy it. But for the purpose
of this loop, I would hope to see a clear relationship of elements discussed
and their relevance to the sq.ft. experience.
One final suggestion. Rather than focus on whether
something was on or off topic and waste time discussing it, can we just
assume the best of each other and if someone posts something, trust that
for him/her it was related to sq.ft. gardening as he/she experiences it.
Within this gracious attitude though, I think it would be beneficial to
all if we evaluated our posts carefully and be willing to take the time
to submit less relevant topics elsewhere if it is so important to discuss.
Now if someone thinks I misunderstand the purpose
of this loop, kindly just tell me and direct me to where I can find what
I am looking for. It is not my intention to offend or impose on a pleasantly
functioning group if everyone else is happy with it being loosely related
to Mel's book content.

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.htmlDear
Friends, Do others believe as I do that our aesthetic-related
discussions occurring here about "sqfting" cannot be avoided from
as easily as some seem to do? Do you wish that we could benefit from ongoing
discussions on some topics which complement sqfting while nevertheless
not directly discussing the mechanics of gardening? I
know I could benefit from others' opinions of form, function, design, and
experience. I suggest to you that plants which may not be planted directly
in our sqft beds but which affect our whole gardening experience deserve
to be discussed. Do our raised beds exist alone without
affecting the appearance and beauty of our yards and lives? Why can we
not enjoy a greater latitude while discussing these important factors in
our yards and especially how they relate directly to our whole experience
as we enjoy and work in our gardens? As I think of
each step in building my own square foot garden I cannot separate the annual
and perennial flowers which will provide such beauty. For example my clematis
will be behind the corn (if it works out). I am trying to work out a comprehensive
garden view where all the elements cannot be ignored without harming
the whole point of the exercise in the art of square foot gardening.
I ask you to share your view here either for or against greater
latitude so we may discuss more than just how we build the physical garden
but how we can build sqft gardening into an experience for all to enjoy.
Feel free to say what you think. You will not hurt my feelings.
Have a great day,bill missen.
