Preen is a preemergent herbicide. I used it successfully at my community
plot in 1995. It's orange granules remain on top of the soil, looking
pretty ugly, but Preen does seem to be effective. It does nothing for weeds
that have already started growing, but it seems to suppress germination of
new seeds (both weeds and desirable plants) for at least 6 weeks when
applied per label instructions.
The summer of '95 was dry as toast here in D.C., so pretty much all the good
stuff in the garden crisped out before August 1. In an ordinary-rain year,
perhaps 2 applications of Preen would be required in the first half of the
summer.
I don't think using it suppressed any of the desirable vegetation in my garden.
