For the soft bodied insects, to work like diatomaceous earth ,you need something to scratch them as they crawl across. I don't use diatomaceous earth because I don't want extra stuff going down my lungs. I get enough. I have been saving egg shells. I am going to place them in the refrig for several hours and then crush them. After that will place crushed eggshells in areas I know to be high trafficked by slugs and snails in my garden. I have never done it before, but the principle should be the same.
