RE: beans - harvest quantity per square? and other veggie questions.

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

JC,

On the number of beans to plant…

Gosh, there are too many variables (soil, experience, lost to disease, etc).

As Lisa pointed out, your pole beans should keep producing. Your bush
plants will not. I'd suggest 5 - 7 pole. This gives you a little safety
net. With poles, the more you pick the more they produce.

On the bush side a square is nine plants. That should be enough to give you
1 pound a week with succession planting. I'm basing that info on my Mom's
journal from the last two seasons. She planted a few ten foot (not sq.
foot) rows of a bean similar to Royal Burgundy. Her total estimate per row
was about 550 pods weighing a little more than 4 pounds.

You can always cut back or increase your next plantings.

If this is a new garden you may want to use an inoculant. Beans aren't
recommended for transplanting.
