Re: Corn situation

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Dunno what sort of soil y'all have down in Hammus alabamus country, Deb, but
here in Montreal on heavy clay, I planted Bloody Butcher and Golden Bantam
last year, without hilling or packing, just some mulch after the middle of
June, and the corn stood against the wind all right....

Mebbe some of them sissy hybrid corns need to be staked and supported with
guy lines, or maybe if you have sand or pure melsoil, you should be
concerned, but with tried and true heirloom corn I don't worry 'bout nothin'
but raccoons.....

OTOH, Dick Raymond suggests that you plant the corn in a furrow about four
inches deep, cover with an inch of soil, and then as the plant grows
gradually fill in the furrow; or hill the corn two or three times to kill
weeds and add more support.

That seems like advice to follow for yer lighter soils....

Frank---hopefully avoiding corn-fusion, he hopes to corn-found the
skeptics...:-)
