Re: SQFT Digest - 3 Aug 1997 to 4 Aug 1997

I have white dutch all over my garden. It is like a weed but it doesn't seem
to do any harm. As a matter of fact, it seems to act like a mulch in that it
helps keep the soil cooler and moister. It also holds to soil together.
However, it is somewhat invasive.
I see only one problem in using it as a cover crop and that is that not
enough green stuff is produced. In other words, it is low growing and
doesn't produce enough growth to make a substantial ammendment for the soil.
I have grown buckwheat (I think that's what it was called) and that grew
like gangbusters--fast and high. Lots and lots of green stuff to add to the
soil.
The little dutch clover is a more gentle and refined cover crop.
