Blueberries definitely like acidic soil. Before attempting to change your southern Ontario soil's pH, take a pH tester to it and find out where you stand now. [If you're using a battery-operated probe, be absolutely certain the probe is spanking clean and dry. The soil, OTOH, must be damp for the meter to work.] If the reading is 6.5 or higher, your blueberries will not be as happy as at 5 or so. Aluminum sulfate is a common soil acidifier, and if a fine adjustment is needed, you might consider mulching over time with peatmoss, which is itself acidic. As it breaks down and gets incorporated into the soil, rather than sitting on top of it, the pH should gently descend. Among the synthetic fertilizers, MirAcid is specifically targeted to acid-loving fruits, veggies, and shrubs/flowers. It's by those MiracleGro people. I don't know of a natural (organic) fertilizer that specifically adjusts pH downward, but if others do, please share this with the List. --Janet ------------------------------------------------------------------ Janet Wintermute jwintermute@ids2.idsonline.com *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe, send to: listserv@umslvma.umsl.edu the body message: unsubscribe sqft See http://www.umsl.edu/~silvest/garden/sqft.html for archive, FAQ and more.
