If you click on the colored link below it will take you to a great source
for such information. Mel Bartholmew is a leading authority in sqft
gardening and his book which is featured on that site has much information
on companion and compatible plants. Also featured is Jonathan Mier's Garden
Manager Program.

If your fence faces the right way, you may just be doing the right thing.
An E to W fence with the cabbages on the southern side would be great but on
Northern side not so. The stringbeans will climb the fence saving space and
providing privacy. If the cabbages are in constant or near so shade they
might do poorly. All such questions you will find answered in Mel's book.
There are others also some even at your public library. This list is also
an excellent source. You will find it populated by a pretty good bunch of
people.
