Boron (borax etc) is quite effective on indoor pests but should not be used in the garden. It is a very effective herbicide and can be quite long lasting. Also if it comes in contact with wet wood it will etch the wood. I would tolerate ants in compost and on the whole they do more good as predators than harm as "livestock farmers." If they are farming aphids, scale, whitefly, attack the livestock rather than the farmers. Vaseline works well as a barrier around plant stems if needed. There has been plant damage even to woody plants by the direct application of Tanglefoot to the bark. Happy Gardening, Pat
