Thick Tomato Stems

The best reason to grow thick, stubby tomato stems is that they stand
up and hold the foliage above the wet soil.  In flats and trays, that
is important to prevent fungal diseases.  Also, the thicker the pathway,
the greater the path for nutrient flow.
