Re: Tomato Seed


Somebody, I forget who (I blew the email away and then a fraction of a
second later something clicked) was having trouble keeping the soil
moist enough for direct seeding.

What I do (at least with carrots), is plant out the seed in shallow
furrows, then backfill and cover the row with a strip of carpet. This
does two things: 1) it stops the soil drying out so fast, and 2) it
stops the seed getting washed out of the filled furrow. It's really
important to check your seedbed daily and remove the cover as soon as
the seeds start germinating, because you get sunburnt seedlings if you
remove it too late.

This probably won't help people with cats, but it's a start.
