Mary, good questions!  I'm putting in berries and grapes this year right 
along a useless fence I have.  The little reading I've done thus far suggests 
that raspberries like "good, deep soil", which is going to take some work 
around here with our decomposed granite.  Also, Sunset Western Garden says 
that in my zone they may like partial shade, since our summers can get so hot 
(USDA 9, Sunset 23).  I'm probably going with Bababerry and Boyne, which 
sound like they'll tolerate the heat better.
Blackberries sound far more forgiving in my zone.
